My first-ever jumpseat (I shoulda told the story in the post, lol) was at the end of my Alaska bush pilot adventure. I must say it was a thrill to jumpseat my way from JNU to PHX for the very 1st time!

Think of jumpseating as the FREEDOM to live wherever you want to! You get to decide whether it's worth it. Those guys who live in Frankfurt and Thailand? Worth it, lol!

As you chase the career, you'll be based in so many different places your head will spin. So, it's good to keep a "home base," but be flexible wit "crash pads" as you move up the aviation ladder.

But, there IS something to living/working in the same city...what a concept, lol!capnauxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13020957375172560992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7002968705989988807.post-4296730448293744032013-06-28T14:17:53.891-07:002013-06-28T14:17:53.891-07:00I have jumpseated from Seattle to: Anchorage, Minn...I have jumpseated from Seattle to: Anchorage, Minnesota, Terre Haute, New York, Guyana, Arizona, McMinnvile, Detroit, Kansas City... and that was just for work. Now I can walk to work. There is something said for being based at home. It's something to think about though for me in the future. A situation like yours would be ideal for sure. Living at the homebase has to have it's advantages. Definitely something to think about in the future for me. Probably once I make the majors, I just can't see it being worth it while flying at the regionals. I heard from an ATC controller on FB about the jumpseat (he loved the article but didn't post). He used to take them often, until post-9/11 the misguided FAA, looking to "do something," banned people like him, and Flight Attendants, from taking the seat. It's frustrating, as I believe it promotes safety through understanding what's going on on "the other side."

Glad you liked the vid and the post--and yes, that "Catch Me" clip is hilarious, huh!capnauxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13020957375172560992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7002968705989988807.post-79058531111500431132013-06-27T12:46:59.522-07:002013-06-27T12:46:59.522-07:00That's, great, Joanna, glad you got the experi...That's, great, Joanna, glad you got the experience! I'm glad you had the chance to witness the C-17 up front. What a thrill it must have been to watch 'em throw the props into Beta mode inflight and crank into a STOL field! Thanks for sharing your experience.

Your fireman's blog, Report on Conditions (http://report-on-conditions.blogspot.com/) looks fascinating!

Thanks for the input!capnauxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13020957375172560992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7002968705989988807.post-34545048109922179482013-06-26T14:28:23.630-07:002013-06-26T14:28:23.630-07:00I have never had the opportunity to ride in the ju...I have never had the opportunity to ride in the jumpseat of a civilian airliner, but I have had the opportunity to ride in the jumpseat of a C-17 a few times. I have to tell you, it is an amazing experience.

First, there are two of them and they are full sized and very comfortable. Second, the C-17 is an amazing aircraft that has an amazing amount of power. That power seems magnified when the aircraft is lightly loaded as it usually has been when I have flown on them.

I have had further luck, as I was in the jumpseat once when we did a maximum performance take off (I forgot what the crew called the procedure) and once when we did a tactical approach and landing. There is something profound when thrust reversers are deployed at 8000 ft. that get your attention! Both procedures make you think about the role of the loadmaster and the crews who secure the load back in the cargo bay.

Anyway, I enjoy your blog, thanks for the post.Capt. I asked her, "Was that the highlight of your day?" She said, "That was the highlight of my life!" Sigh...young love! ;-)

Yes, I am equally bummed we gotta keep you guys outta the cockpit...but I suppose it's for the best.... :-/capnauxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13020957375172560992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7002968705989988807.post-71714086357074910312013-06-26T11:12:38.550-07:002013-06-26T11:12:38.550-07:00Wonderful blog entry! I still wish though - the days were here when an aviation enthusiast could utter the words to a gate agent "If the captain doesn't mind and the jump seat is empty, you could squeeze another standby on board" - trust me - me and my ever-present camera would WELCOME the opportunity! But - alas - those days as long gone - in a previous life though, they have brought me into cockpits of large and small - from a JS41 to a B747-400 and all sizes inbetween - dreaming - dreaming - wait - darn - back to work.....Mark Lawrencehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14499687271880905781noreply@blogger.com
